I licked my lips. That meal was hale and hearty and could lift the spirits of a dead man. Given the current situation, I kept that last observation to myself. We cleared our plates and cutlery, and Cara and Kim loaded them into the dishwasher.

“Right, boys, go outside and get some fresh air.” She patted Gar on the back. “Remember yer promise to Doyle. Go walk off that meal and then get training.”

“Do ye hear that, Raff? It’s time for us kiddos to go out and play.”

I dipped my head out the window. The gray sky looked a little brighter than earlier that morning. “Come on, Gar, last one outside is a rotten tomato.”

“Tomaytoe—I love the way ye guys say that.”

A loud chiming interrupted our banter. Cara grabbed her phone and fixed it with a scrutinizing stare.

“Amazing yer getting a signal,” Gar said, looking curious.

“Yeah, it’s doing my nut. Signal’s fine one minute and gone the next.”

He clapped his hands together. “Well, we’ll leave ye to it.” He turned to me. “Come on, hoss, time to kick up some dirt.”

I tried to steal Cara’s attention away from her phone. “I’ll see you later, then.”

Cara gave a quick wave of her hand. “See ye later…” Her voice trailed off, her phone the sole focus of her attention.
